Against the tide

myopia, mi-o-pi-a, n. lack of imagination, foresight or   intellectual insight

Prime Minister David Thompson, supported by his Cabinet, has taken the expected reactionary view to the issue of immigration by our Caribbean brothers and sisters without apparently identifying any real solution to what is perceived as a problem by so many Barbadians.

What is even more disturbing is that his lukewarm attempt to solve the “problem” makes no mention of people who are not our neighbours, but who are here illegally. The lack of a clearly defined message makes it appear as if Caribbean people are being targeted as the scapegoats in the immigration morass.

There are a few things that Barbadians must consider when examining this question of intra-regional migration. First and foremost we cannot extract it from the larger mission of regionalism.

Half a century after the concept of a common people with a common destiny was first mooted are we satisfied that as members of a geographic region with a similar historical experience that there is more that unites us than divides us?

Are we satisfied as well that our future prosperity lies in unity and not isolation? If the answer to these two seminal questions is yes then all that remains is how we choose to accomplish the goal.

As a region we are not without experience in this regard. Despite the failure of the political structure of Federation, the University College of the West Indies, the West Indies Meteorological Service, the West India Regiment and the Federal Supreme Court and their successors are proof positive of the benefits of pooling our resources.

From Carifta to Caricom to the CSME the goal has been collective effort for individual gain. Regrettably, community has often been subsumed by sovereignty for the sake of political expediency and to the detriment of greater prosperity than we currently enjoy as a region.

So where do we go from here and why is it important to Barbadians. First, the reality of the situation – in a world where the economic pecking order is constantly being re-defined to benefit the giants it is obviously easier to build alliances with the countries you know and with whom you have something in common.

The facts already indicate that Caricom countries buy fifty-two percent of our exports; twenty percent of our tourists come from neighbouring countries and the Caribbean Basin is a natural extension of the local market for companies, large and small, wishing to expand their operations. So if we are going to continue to grow our economies in an international climate of constraint, the Caribbean community is already a natural fit.

Naturally we must expect our neighbours will wish to have the same opportunity for growth that we do. The stronger they are, the greater opportunities exist for us to trade with them in both goods and services. It therefore stands to reason that if we pool our resources to avoid the cost of duplicating regulatory, legal; research and financing institutions then the benefits will accrue to all.

People though are the market. Not companies or institutions nor even sovereign states. Once the people prosper, the market will prosper. This is why it is urgent for the Prime Minister to push for a common protocol to define contingent rights.

If a man is working and paying taxes it is not unreasonable for him to expect certain benefits from the state. Prohibition does not work. It will create an underclass that can potentially undermine the system. It is better to embrace a man for mutual gain than to try to shut him out.

When will the Prime Minister recognize this next crucial step?

It quite clear to any person who has heard this Anti-Carricom Nationals in barbados Rhetohir form the Dlp what the real motive is

It a Detractor created by David Thompson government to side track the public forcus form the real failings of this government on one key indicator of an healty economy:

Maintaince and Creation of employment in this economy.
Because of the DLP Economic failings, Our Carricom Nationals here are bein used as SCAPEGOATS for the dlp inability to create jobs as the BLP DID.

The Dee IN Dlp also stand for dieciver and Detractor

So dont your self get Tight UP with these DLP tricks and flicks

The dlp is failing Barbados Big time

The qusetion which must be asked is what will be the response of our Carricom neighbours and Governments when the policy is implemented?

When is it only targeting Carricom nationals and not non carricom as well?
Thats straingh forward discrimination and what can evensay racists , as most Guyanese and Trinidadians of Indian descent will be come targets of harrassment,

Cant one see the terrible consequences long term between the difference racial and ethic groups here?

This a recipt for ftrue tenison and division between peoples.

That another meaning for the Dee in DLP.

    Dividers and Division.

    whooh on the DLP.

Barbados landscape is distint to become one which we have to be use to

    Practically so, we have begun to contemplate the issues of trade and travel intraregionally, to estimate the value of our CARICOM family;

I say family, as opposed to neighbours,
    because from a sociological standpoint these people are not only the job-takers and go-getters, they are also our uncles, and aunts, cousins and nieces;

which were to be afforded through the arrangement of CARICOM a decent lifestyle, where aspirations could become
real and dreams did not have to die.

“Ever so welcome, wait on ‘our call” is unfortunately the policy of the present leader of the majority party,

    what is not right about his espousal, is that the other members of cabinet are silent on the matter;

so aside from adversarial party- government,
    we have kitchen cabinet too?

    tsk tsk tsk…

Freedom of information or free from information, Which is it?

Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation TV promotional ad ‘
” My TV” Lord have mercy . Tonight’s news one whole hour of the DLP as well as the program following all inclusive DLP programming. Nothing else ,not a word from the other side and where is the balance. All trampled upon and lying underground it seems. Well , well, is this fair and balanced coverage?
Just wondering now if CBC is standing on its own i.e making all the money it needs to run its operations or is it still being subsidised by the Public Treasury.

    MY TV all inclusively DLP.
CBC is surely due for renaming.
By the way have they forgotten Sir Frederick Smith from St Andrew and Mrs Masie Barker Welch, people close enough to a certain Tamarind Tree in St Joseph. I really was looking in the mirrow to see Maisie or Sleepy .But the mirrow get cracked so the images I see mixed up ,can’t put the pieces together. BLPS would not be featured even though conceived of by former BLP government and works partly executed by BLP Admin.
Time for some okras in de stew and I gine in my 16×9 tinning badoo.

Gone to pick up de pieces of glass.

The big hollabaloo in Barbados about immigration and patriotism is for a purpose.

Everything in Barbados is iced in immigration and so it will be for the next for years. Can’t you see?
Be patriotic and enjoy some of the cake since more would be available for Barbadians.

Immigration is really a titilating topic.

I would like to know where Mr Sinckler found the 65 houses that were missing. I thought by now some thieves or associates would be in Dodds. What a burning shame Mr Minister.
Will there be an apology forthcoming?
Were the 65 missing houses mobile?
    Were you deliberately misleading Bajans?

Truth without a pinch of salt is desirable.

The tide was really high down by the riverside today. It seems like David from the Riverside is bent on recapturing some popularity for his
stat ion. But the other David from the underground world claiming IMMIGRATION as theirs. I don’t know what to believe. At the River the Main Man David was on Starcom in profile, followed by a big able lot of talk on this immigration issue. Dat doan seem to de by chance . Well over by the Underground things were really slow. Patriotism was not very evident. De underground could very well produce the next cabinet minister cause most of the DLP policy ideas come from the BLOG Capital of the Underground so they say. Dey even claimed that David from Riverside Seat change he mout. All last week dem wash de mouths pon he. So it seems that he redeeming he self. After all Starcom Talk Shows produce 3 ministers for the new government. Dat is a high percentage out of 18 or so ministers.Dat don’t seem to be a coincidence. Wa loss I fuget Mr Marshall of ‘Tell Barbados the Facts’ fame. Dat is his hobby horse too. Boy ! the Boys from Bay Street Club getting real help wid managing and plenty ideas for the good of the country. Patriotism grand muddah, ya hear! Wunnah hear de programme Friday on BWA. Justification enough for increases. Not the same support on Public Sector Reform though.

De builders must learn to read plans. It is nuff trick in trade and ya got to be able to read fuh ya self. Ya get de point.
