BARBADOS LABOUR PARTY

Chapo Poll Favours Bees

THE POLLING EXPERTS have spoken — an increasing number of Barbadians prefer the Barbados Labour Party over the Democratic Labour Party to run the country’s affairs.

Additionally, it showed that on the issue of leadership, Barbadians prefer Owen Arthur over David Thompson two to one.

A series of constituency polls commissioned by the BLP and conducted by the Cave Hill Associates Polling Organisation (CHAPO), a group of pollsters whose finding across the Caribbean have proven to be remarkably accurate, contradicts another done for the Nation newspaper by local pollster Peter Wickham.

The CHAPO polls each sampled 600 voters in 14 constituencies identified as battleground ridings, based on election results over 25 years, compared to Wickham’s 30 persons polled per constituency.

According to Deputy Prime Minister and St. Michael North East candidate Mia Mottley, this approach makes the CHAPO poll significantly more reliable than the Wickham formula.

Of the 14 constituencies polled, the BLP leads in nine, there is a statistical dead heat in three and the Bees are behind in two. The CHAPO poll ignored constituencies like St. John and St. Peter where there is less doubt about the outcome. Just two nights ago political scientist Dr. George Bell at Cave Hill reported that there had been a “swing back to the Government”.

“What we are seeing now is that during the campaign there is a swing back to the Government,” he said. The complete results of the CHAPO poll are expected to be released to the public this weekend.

    David Thompson Comes Out Swinging
    January 10, 2008 · 130 Comments
To those political pundits who have determined that Leader of the Opposition David Thompson is too much of a choir boy for the hurly burly of politics got a rude awakening at the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) last night at Haggatt Hall. In a 90 minute presentation, David Thompson betrayed a high level of rascality when he ruthlessly prosecuted a case of corruption against Prime Minister Owen Arthur and his government. At the end on it all, David Thompson may have quelled all the doubts about his leadership caused by the 1994 Queens Park IMF Affair. He gave the stunned crowd the evidence which surrounds the much discussed cheque donation which was deposited to Arthur’s personal account. Again and again, the crowd was bombarded with video presentation of cheques and documents projected on the two big screens to support his charge. The high level of financial contributions by the former Caribbean Commercial Bank to Arthur headed by Mariano Browne at the time (Former Chairman of Enterprise Growth Fund) and the BLP during the 2003 general election was mind blowing. Additionally, the reference to the 4.25% commission demanded in the Eastern Lottery Gambling deal i.e. Barbados Cricket Association lottery which was pocketed by a high ranking government official has thickened the plot. He also introduced the name Hallam Nichols as the man who has been pocketing millions in commissions because of all the government business directed his way. Thompson made the point that Hallam Nichols and the Prime Minister are very close friends. The close friendship was illustrated when Nichols was invited to Arthur’s private wedding over Ministers in Arthur’s cabinet.

The ‘cheque’ which was deposited by Arthur to his personal account and Thompson’s expose of the ‘flyover’ project may have been the performance to date to firmly move the scales in favour of his party. To all those present who heard the case leveled by Thompson against Arthur and the BLP, the verdict is GUILTY as charged.

Barbadians are sick and fed up with Owen Arthur’s administration
They say that a drowning man will catch at a straw.

Nowhere is this statement more accurate than in the case of the prime minister of Barbados Owen Arthur. Barbadians are sick and fed up with his administration and they thank him for the Christmas gift of calling elections here in Barbados just before Christmas Day so that they can remove him.

Everywhere in the country where political meetings are being held, the people are expressing a desire to be rid of this Barbados Labour Party from power. Noticing this ground swell of opposition to his party Prime Minister Owen Arthur has become desperate. His latest act of desperation is to try to involve the government and people of Taiwan in Barbados’ election.

He has stated boldly and publicly that Taiwan is funding the Opposition Democratic Labour Party. This is a bold-faced lie with not an ounce of truth to it. He realises that the people of Barbados are ready to dump his administration and he is drawing whatever red herring that he can find across the trail.

Prime Minister Owen Arthur it will not work this time around. We Barbadians have a burning desire to see the back of your Government.

What is even more disgusting in this situation is the blatant collusion of the main newspaper in Barbados, the Nation. They have banned all columnists who they perceive as writing any article which will give a balanced perspective of the election campaign. Anything that is not an out and endorsement of Prime Minister’s Owen Arthur’s Barbados Labour Party will not see the light of day in this Barbados Nation newspaper. This Nation newspaper is in the hip pocket of the Prime Minister Owen Arthur. If Prime Minister Owen Arthur wants something to talk about then let him discuss this sickening situation at the Nation newspaper. We Barbadians are disgusted with it.

No matter what Prime Minister Owen Arthur does and says between now and the 15th January 2008, polling day will not save his squandermania government. We Barbadians are determined to remove him from power.

    Time for change, Owen.

Hallam Nichols, Owen Arthur and the Crooked Business of “Commissions” On Barbados Government Expenditures
How $100 Million Out Of Every Billion Dollars Spent By Government Goes To Crooked Politicians & Their Friends

See that new Government vehicle driving down the road? Maybe it is a SSA truck, or a supervisor’s auto from the Ministry of Public Works.

Your tax dollars bought those vehicles and the equipment in the back – but what you don’t know is that you paid five to ten percent more for the vehicles and equipment than you should have.

That extra “commission” (or “juice” as some call it) was paid to a middleman – sometimes called a “facilitator” or “coordinator” – who is said to have “put the deal together” or “arranged delivery” or “researched the purchase” or any of a dozen euphemisms that are used to conceal from the public just what is really happening.

Why doesn’t the Government of Barbados “research” its own purchases, or “arrange delivery” itself instead of paying “commission” to a “middleman”?

    Why, indeed!

The answer is because crooked politicians and government officials approve paying the five or ten percent commission to the middleman – who then quietly pays a kickback to the politician or official.

    What a cosy system!

    Meet Hallam Nichols

Hallam Nichols is one of the foremost “middlemen” on the island. A close personal friend of Prime Minister Owen Arthur, he was invited to the PM’s recent second marriage when many Cabinet Ministers and others were not.

It is said that Hallam Nichols gets a piece of the action on a significant proportion of – some say the majority of – vehicle and equipment purchases made by the Barbados Government. He has been paid millions of dollars in “commissions” and “finders fees”.

Why has the Barbados Government directed millions of dollars of purchases through this one man, this close friend of Prime Minister Owen Arthur?

When the new DLP Government comes into power, we hope that they have the tenacity to look at every deal this man has ever made with the BLP government – because at the end of the money trail there are sure to be offshore bank accounts owned by the Prime Minister and other BLP big-ups.

How Barbados Flyover Middleman Jonathan Danos Operated In Jamaica

For more information on how these corrupt “middleman” operations are conducted, read a new story in the Jamaica Observer that explains how Barbados Flyover middleman 3S Structural Steel Solutions President Jonathan Danos and others took 8.5% of 45 Jamaican bridge projects valued at 22 million British pounds. (Jamaica Observer story link here)

Yes… when the DLP forms the new Barbados government, it is going to be exciting times ’bout hey!

Ammm, Peter Wickham, 14 years experience (At least), 100% election accuracy in Barbados, same methodology throughout, predicted BLP wins in 94, 99 and 2003.

CHAPO, started late last year, only one other poll to date, Ian Boxill’s lack of understanding re the local environment, not clearly explained methodologies, perceived bias in previous poll and non publishing of the swing factor back then….

Which one should I believe? It’s a no brainer.

Lil Bro, like every other BLP supporter when presented with an argument you miss the point. the point is, The BLP has dismissed Peter Wickham’s poll all together and embraced this based on “flawed methodology”. One could easily argue that track record should be the more salient criteria for acceptance.

If you’re willing to accept both polls then great, but don’t shut down one cauase it doesn’t agree with what you’d like to see and the embarce another, that you yourself commissioned by the way.

Barbadians are smarter than that thank God.

Owen Arthur Says Noel “Instant Million” Is The Best Tourism Minister Barbados Ever Had!
‘It happened because a man who has a passion for the industry, who is respected by everyone in tourism, at home and abroad, has gone out of his way to work every day’ Owen Arthur said.

This was part of a speech by the Prime Minister when describing Minister of Tourism, Noel Lynch, last Wednesday during at meeting at Villa Road, St. Michael.

The Prime Minister went on to describe, Noel Lynch ‘as the most outstanding Minister of Tourism, Barbados has ever had’.

    Well!

    Does the record confirm this?

27 hotels have closed during the 13 years of the BLP administration.

Between 2002 and 2004, some 2,000 jobs were lost in the sector. Down from 14,200 to 12,200 and that’s according to the Ministry of Labour.

In the first nine months of last year alone over 67,000 airline seats were lost.

The stewardship of Minister Lynch over the return of LIAT to a monopoly carrier has decimated Intra Caribbean travel, with all the detrimental economic consequences this has inflicted on the accommodation and ancillary tourism sector across the region.

Only now, is The Minister speaking about ‘a strict zoning regime is coming for condominiums’. 27 closed hotels later.

In their manifesto they are boasting a growth in tourism earnings from $2 billion to $4 billion in five years.

A growth that they have not even been close to achieve even with rampant inflation!

The Prime Minister may be under the illusion. That Noel Lynch is the ‘most outstanding Minister of Tourism’ but I suggest he talks to a red cap, a taxi driver, a hotel room maid, a restaurant waiter or one of the many hotel staff that that have had the working hours reduced during this, the peak winter season.

Ask also one of the 10 passengers that flew in on the much heralded Fort Lauderdale flight yesterday or the hundreds of passengers that have had their flights cancelled in recent weeks.

You only have to compare our performance both in terms of tourism arrivals and earnings with virtually all of our Caribbean neighbours to see exactly how we are doing.

And no rational person could conclude we have the ‘most outstanding Minister of Tourism’.

Forensic Audit Required At Chief Licensing Department In The Pine
    January 13, 2008 · 34 Comments
One issue which has overshadowed this election is the specter of mounting corruption in government. David Thompson and his party have attempted to illustrate in their campaign the many instances e.g. ABC Highway contract and the unwillingness of government to follow the procurement policy, Hardwoods Factory Housing, etc. These are the high profile examples and have for obvious reasons gained national prominence. It is known that Barbados is a small place and little can happen in secrecy before it leaks into the public domain.

Over the years and under successive governments, we have all heard the whispers about how some people were able to acquire Public Service Vehicles (PSV) permits. We have also wondered why successive governments would have resisted implementing the long proposed Transport Authority or some other watchdog agency which would remove certain decisions from the ambit of the Minister of Transport and high ranking Civil Servants. As observers, we have seen the chaos which our public transportation system has descended. Barbadians have reached the point where only those at the low end of the social ladder access public transportation as a first option. The objective for all Barbadians is now to own a car as quickly as possible to avoid the public transportation system. We reject Prime Minister Arthur’s claim that the increase in the number of cars is solely as a result of the economic prosperity of Barbados. The lack of a discernible traffic management policy has now led to the situation where PSV’s operate disproportionately on several routes across Barbados, i.e. a crazy high number of PSV licenses have been issued on routes like Silver Sands and the Pine. The end result is the ‘mini-bus hustle’ which has led to a negative sub-culture in our society.

Barbados Labour Party (BLP) Say No To ‘Extra’ Debate On Leadership
    January 5, 2008 · 32 Comments

Many Barbadians were looking forward to the televised debate on Law on Order last night on the CBC TV 8. Instead news broke in the afternoon that there is some confusion about the format the debates should follow. The Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in a clear the air statement today had this to say:

For this coming election the corporation has increased the number of debates to four. The topics are: Law And Order, Social Policy And The Environment, Economic Management And Leadership. The Barbados Labour Party has confirmed its willingness to again participate in the debates and is agreeable to the four as proposed by CBC. The Democratic Labour Party is seeking to change the format of the debates to have two by representatives and two by leaders. As a consequence, the CBC has postponed the recording of these debates – Source NationNewspaper

It seems strange to BU that the BLP have been making an issue of Leadership and if what is reported in the Press is accurate, David Thompson seems willing to go head to head with Arthur. Why is the BLP avoiding the extra debate with Prime Minister Arthur? We would have thought that Arthur would welcome it. This willingness of Arthur and the BLP to run away from debates comes against the backdrop of Arthur not participating in parliamentary debates over the last year. Coincidentally, Arthur’s distaste for debate in the Lower House occurred soon after last year’s clash with Thompson over an alleged donation of $750,000.00 which was deposited to his personal account. Some people are of the view that after the poor showing by Liz Thompson and Clyde Mascoll in the no-confidence debate this had the effect of influencing Arthur to dissolve parliament. We are sure that the BLP have a good reason for wanting the one leader format of the debate to continue. In the BU household when we look at the preceding events, something does not add-up.

The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Takes-off
    January 2, 2008 · 52 Comments

The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) officially introduced its 30 candidates last night to run in the upcoming General Election against the tranquil backdrop of the Caribbean Sea, and punctuated with the songs of music from several top local artistes which culminated with the international Luciano. BU would have needed the help of Peter Wickham’s CADRES to determine who amongst the large throng gathered were present to witness the entertainment or the political offerings. The BU household noticed that the make-up of the crowd came in all shapes and sizes; we witnessed Blacks, Whites, Chinese, Guyanese, Jamaicans, lawyers, doctors, bankers, the unemployed and BLPites to name a few groups.

The huge crowd which settled in the basin of the Bay Gardens in Oistins was treated to a Cultural Extravaganza which was only dampened when the sound system failed and caused proceedings to halt for 30 minutes plus. Leader of the Opposition David Thompson later apologized to those in attendance and attributed the mishap to sabotage. He reported that wires were cut! A part of the crowd panicked soon after when some jostling occurred but calm was quickly restored.

A few of the candidates addressed the large crowd but it was the usual political rhetoric. We should mention that Denis Kelman still found the time to be a real turn-off in his delivery; his speech was too long in the context of the limited time which was allotted to others. David Thompson used the opportunity, despite the shortened time caused by the cut-wire incident, to address the issue of leadership. It appears at this early stage of the campaign that LEADERSHIP will be a key issue, and he has elected to tackle it head-on! He was deliberate to make the point that he became a member of the DLP while still a schoolboy in 1978. He had to work 8 years while in the Opposition to earn his chance to be in government – listen to David Thompson. This was obviously a swipe at Mascoll and the several former DLPites who crossed the floor familiarly known as Arthur’s politics of inclusion.

P.S. How could we forget the very short video presented on two huge screens which featured a news capsule from the People News Network (PNN) which was hosted by Patrick Gollop who interviewed Clyde Mascoll played by his look alike, Malik. It was hilarious to all who witnessed it.

‘A strict zoning regime is coming for condominiums under a new Barbados Labour Party (BLP) Government.
That is according to the BLP candidate for St. Michael South and Minister of Tourism Noel Lynch, who told a meeting in his constituency on Wednesday night that this would be regulated under a new Condominium Development Act which would reserve the beach front land for traditional type hotels while condominiums would be on the land side’.
