The remarks by David Thompson at the Annual Conference of the Demorcratic Labour Party concerning the workings of the Social Partnership demand the attention of all Barbadians. He said inter alia that “what the social partnership has done in Barbados is that it has stifled the voices of the workers and it has denied the workers the right to demand and fight for increases in income to keep abreast with the rising cost of living in Barbados.” (Advocate, Monday, August 27, 2007.)
The remark should draw the ire of all the trade union leaders in Barbados for the major inference which can be drawn from the statement is that all of our trade union leaders have failed the workers of this country. The conclusion would be that Sir Roy Trotman, Bobby Morris Gabby Scott, Levere Richards all of the Barbados Workers Union and Joseph Goddard and Dennis Clarke of the National Union of Public Workers have all failed in their duty in representing the workers of Barbados. Are our workers to infer that the above union bosses are in collusion with others to short – change the workers of this country?
It must not be forgotten that the Social Partnership was established under the last DLP administration and any suggestion of conspiracy amongst the Social Partnership or any flaws in the way it was set up would have to fall squarely on the shoulders of Thompson and Sandiford. But was the social Partnership set up to satisfy the demands of the International Monetary Fund? We recall the very bold declaration by Thompson that he knows what the IMF wants and the IMF knows what he wants. If the horror stories emanating from countries where the IMF has been involved is to be measured then clearly the IMF knew what it wanted from Barbados.
The question is did Thompson know what he wanted from the IMF? We all know what the IMF’s views are on government sponsored social programmes and the failure rate of their economic remedies in many countries. It is against this background that Barbadians will better appreciate why Prime Minister Arthur had to ask the IMF official stationed in the Ministry of Finance to leave the compound. So how has the Unions failed us Thompson? They failed us when they allowed the DLP government to carry out an 8% salary cut; they failed us when they “acquiesced” to send home over 3,000 public sector workers; they failed us when they refused to report on the high level of fore-closures on workers’ homes by the mortgagors; they failed us when they allowed unemployment rate to climb to 26.2% under Thompson.
Today our Unions are winning. They are winning when in salary negotiations from 1995 to 2007 they accepted substantial percentage increases; they are winning because they were able negotiate a $10 million bonus payment for workers; they won when they negotiated a 2% payment at the end of the agreement covering 2003-2005. They are winning in maintaining the jobs in our industries by enhancing our competitive position; they are winning by helping our workers to improve their standard of living, purchase homes and other consumer goods e.g. motor cars; they have won when they agreed to zero rate food items on which Thompson and the Dems had imposed the 15% VAT. The accomplishment of the Unions in Barbados is immeasurable.
Only Thompson would want to sully their impressive record. His problem is that he can no longer play political blood sport with the workers’ lives as they have shown no interest in the sharing of the fatted calf.

David Thompson and Sir Leroy Trotman have similar views about the reality of the social partnership. Workers have not gotten a fair break in this arrangement and they must. Their approach to resolving this may differ, but certainly they both share the same concern with regards to the workers and this partnership.

You know Adrian the problem with your statement that Sir Roy and thompson have the same views about the reality of the Social Partnership raises a very critical question. How long did thompson share Sir Roy’s views? Did he share these views in 1991 when he sat back and allowed an IMF official to set up shop at the Ministry of Finance to inflict pain and suffering on the workers of this country? Did he share theses views when, in response to the high level of unemployment under the last DLP administration he recommended “bus fare and lunch money”?
I think that Albert Brandford’s column in the Sunday Sun yesterday sums up this pathetic political waste thompson who now wants to piggy back on the views and opinions of our serious leaders in this country who has been doing their home work. It is the believability factor that continues to haunt thompson. He cannot be believed in anything he says. He is seen as a fraud who believes in nothing and cares for no one.
I would recommend Albert Brandford’s column for reading. The BLP also dealt with thompson’s fraudulent character in one of its colunms recently.

This was brought over from the BFP because up until when I left that blog they had not posted it.
Every body who is somebody in Barbados knows that thompson and his other little girlish boys in the DLP are behind the BFP- Jones, Hartley etc. This kind of trash can only be the work of someone without any brains and who is now in a desperate bid to save their political hide.
Every one knows that when thompson loses this election he is done forever. So we all expect these kinds of desperate tactics. What is ironic about them is that he really believes that Barbadians do not know that the biggest political thief around is the very thompson himself. Who collected the largest bulk of cash from the construction of the St. Joseph Hospital that should never have been built? Which DLP Minister reaped the biggest sweets from the unfinished St. John Polyclinic that was never intended to be finished?
Who earned the most cash in Bim in a single transaction for the sale of fifteen pieces of this country’s prime real estate to clico? Whose law office now stands on prime beach front property for which not a single penny was paid? Whose daughter now has significant property vested in her name while the son of the former maid of George Street begs for help in recapturing his mother’s property?
Albert Brandford in a brilliant piece in the Sunday Sun yesterday has put made to any one ever thinking that thompson could ever lead this country. Leonard Shorey, Frank Alleyne, Richie Haynes and many other distinguish writers and political commentators of all concluded that the “believability factor” is what haunts thompson. He is seen as a liar therefore all of this nonsense that he and the fatted calf henchmen at the BFP is doing is falling flat because at the end of the day the question that all Barbadians will ask themselves is this. IF NOT PRIME MINISTER OWEN ARTHUR THEN WHO? Certainly not thompson the liar.

Can you shed any light Rumble ?? Or is this something that the DLP setup the courts to do in England?
BU highlighted the extraordinary announcement by 3S — the company contracted to build the Flyovers states the cost of the project must increase significantly because of unforeseen circumstances. In summary, the scope of work has had to be increased and therefore there is a new cost estimated at BDS360 million dollars. When one considers that Barbadians were told the project would cost BDS120 million dollars, even with a 25% overrun no one in their wildest dream would have thought the final cost would rest at BDS360 million.
The announcement has caused sensible Barbadians to raise questions about the project and specifically the competence of 3S.
What we know about 3S
The truth is we don’t know much. Many Barbadians have been surfing the Internet with little success to find info on the company. On this website we found this sketchy profile:

We are surprise at the age of the company which is listed as being established in 2005. Even more surprising was its listing of 5 employees. This immediately caused us to think that 3S would have to contract services to complete a big job like building flyovers which cost BDS360 million dollars for the Barbados government. We immediately returned to the information highway to search for such a company which would have worked with 3S on the Operation Free Flow Project.
On the 11th May 2007 in the Royal Courts of Justice (London), Jonathan Laszlo DANOS, President of 3S (Barbados) SRL, the company currently engaged by the Government of Barbados to widen the ABC Highway and build overpasses was charged with fraud and conspiracy by his former employers, Mabey and Johnson Ltd.
3S (Barbados) SRL, contention was that they had gained valuable experience while constructing Flyovers in Panama. According to Robert Capurro, Director of Sales-Latin America & Caribbean-Mabey and Johnson Ltd., “Mabey & Johnson has supplied a number of steel flyovers to Panama since 1997. As far as we are aware, no other company has supplied or completed such steel flyovers in that country.”
Bearing in mind the Project Manager of 3S (Barbados) SRL, George Siddall, recently announced that the estimated cost of the work undertaken was expected to rise from US$60 million to US$180 million, it is difficult to understand why your publication/station has not carried this story.

This is all over you site but you seem blinded by it as if it is not there and present, please educate me as to what really could have gone on with this project because they must have a really good reason for a cost that triples and to award this to someone who has never built a flyover before?
Just asking those smarter that I The use of the word smarter was not meant at be directed at you !!!

Isn’t it clear? the collusion between BLP politicians and a Nationnews journalist? Focus your attention of Albert Brandford. A man who has threaten persons to “Put his pen” in them. His recent article titled “Overshadowed” pretends to be asking questions that someone other than himself is asking……
http://www.nationnews.com/289784195470154.php
He then moves on to issue a half hearted challenge to anyone to question the efforts of Sir Leroy Trotman and this is to answer concerns of his making about some alleged degradation of the work of the Unions by David Thompson. Clearly Albert’s attempts in this article is but a partisan conversation with himself, and if as by a stroke of luck Sir Roy Trotman put Albert’s Malicious attempts of attempting to speak on the behalf of the Union, Sir Roy, and the public to rest with his own opinions of the social partnership, which i am of the opinion is very similar to those of Thompson. Sir Roy furthers chastise the two political parties for playing politics with this issue. We know which party David Thompson represents Which party do you represent Albert Brandford?
Sir Leroy comments which are at odds with Albert “BLP penman” Brandford.

The links to the nationnews articles that would demonstrate that Thompy’s views and those of Sir Leroy are not at odds with each other.
