Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing in more common than unsuccessful men of talent. Genius will not: unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

There can be no doubt that that dastardly act by David Ellis, which took place in the studio of StarCom Network on the Sunday’s programme of Brass Tacks will find its rightful place in the law court, thus making the matter subjudice. Paddy will not interfere with the due process of law.
The Rt. Excellent Errol Barrow once admonished poor people to stay clear of the law courts for fear that they maybe abused by the system. We have come a long way since then and poor people have been engaging the services of the courts with much success. We wish Minister Noel Lynch well as he seeks to defend himself from the abuse of a very powerful but irresponsible medium.
The incident raises serious questions about the real role of the press in developing societies like ours. The press, both print and electronic, is a very critical partner in building and shaping a wholesome society. Every word spoken, every picture shown, impacts upon the lives of people and because of its powerful influence in shaping those mindsets there must be as a natural course of their responsibility seek to project the positives aspects of our society at all times.
In every society where the press has taking on a political agenda and where it has used its overwhelming power to negatively influence public opinion those societies became disruptive, democracy came under threat and the lives of their people were thrown into total anarchy. We must guard our nation against such reckless use and abuse of press power. When the citizens of any country has to seek legal recourse from a media that has become malicious, politically motivated and disrespectful to the basic human rights of its people then our democracy is in peril.
When the late Sir Grantley Adams laid the foundation for free education, which was later completed by the late Rt. Excellent Errol Barrow, never in their wildest dreams did they contemplate that the beneficiaries of that great social revolution would today be the subjects of ridicule by a politically lost DLP. There is no doubt that last Sunday’s fiasco had its origin in the DLP’s butcher stall at George Street and that Ellis was only the political surrogate.
The DLP has been for some time engaged in a politics of innuendo in which charges of corruption is continuously leveled but never backed up by a thread of evidence. It should be clear to all that after all the millions of dollars of investment in our social capital any success shown by our people is attacked by this new DLP lead by a man who best fits Calvin Coolidge example of an “educated derelict”.
The question for Barbadians is this. How do you treat to an opposition party that wants to lead this country in a competitively regional and global arena where the accumulation of wealth and financial resources of our people is critical to developing new enterprises and expanding our pool of entrepreneurs? The success of our people has been the bedrock of our society. Today the politics of Thompsonmania threatens that stability.
It is sad when the party that Barrow built can now find itself in a state where its lack of vision and foresight now causes it to see itself and its members suspiciously.

This can only be an issue for the BLP. Polls and percentages should mean a lot to an organization who existance depends heavily on the perception of the public from whom it’s membership gets to access the public trough. The sense is that the majority of Barbadians saw nothing wrong with the questions, and will most likely not view any legal action against Mr. Ellis in a good light. Barney can pursue his constitutional rights, and Barbadians will place their x elswhere.

no wonder Owen was sweating while pleading guilty to making mistakes, after David Thompson blew the whistle on the cheque deposit. The big question now is whether this mistake is criminal? So who is going to report this matter to the Director of Public Prosecution? Of course i would not expect the DPP to do anything about um, but it would be of interest to see How Owen would wiggle out of his publicly made but parliamentary privalaged comments about mistakes in relations to accusations that on the face of it seems to be a misdeamour under “The prevention of curruption act” of Barbados.
Make no mistake about it, i will be calling VOB in the near future to put my questions to the moderator.

The Prevention of Corruption Act from which you quote seems to be saying that Corruption is a misdemeanor.
What is the penalty for a misdemeanor?
Owen may have breathed a sigh of relief after he got home and the lawyer types explaind it to him!!
They probably said, “Owen ma boy, it is only a misdemeanour. Don’t sweat the small stuff.”

Yes that may be the case, not exceeding 7 yrs and no less than 3 yrs. also the DPP is given a window of 6 months on learning about the allege crime to act. Politics is about perception and if i can get this in the public domain they will be the ultimate judge.
I don’t see how he can fair well if this act is read to the public, and then questions are asked about what is already in the public domain given Thompson comments about cheques and deposits and the PM’s reply that he made mistakes. This isn’t any innuendo, or half truths, this is testing facts of admission against facts of law. Now although he made his admission under parliamentary privilege thus protecting himself from prosecution, he cannot now in public deny his comments to Barbadians because there is a hint of criminal intent. Well he could, but it this would be case of double jeopardy. Remain consistent in and out of parliament and open himself to accusations of criminal behavior, or deny his comments in parliament and be forever deemed a liar in the minds of the public, spelling dire consequences at election time. It needs to be pursued.

I too would like to know. I have never seen a photo of him, or David Shorey, but i have seen Rodney Wilkinson, I even have a video of Owen and Rodney riding in a secret service escort in Boston, and sitting at a table to address Barbadians, over in away. There are lot of sound-bite statements that partisan individuals (mostly BLPites) latch onto and publicize as the truth, an example of such is the “Lunch money and bus fare, comment that is attributed to Thompson, and i am learning to distrust them until i am privy to the context in which they were first voiced. It is with this same view that i am questioning the mistrust and concern that seem so prevalent regarding Leroy Parris and David Thompson. I do not know that there is anything unusual in any relationships between these two. There isn’t any information in the public domain to suggest questionable dealings, possible corruption etc as there currently is concerning the relationships between Owen Arthur, David Shorey, Hallam Nicholls and Rodney Wilkinson. I would go further to suggest that our experience with some politicians from humble if not poor backgrounds (Owen and Barney)that has seen them embroiled in suspicious deals, relationships, and questionable wealth accumulation, while in office, should make it easy for citizens to tire of these rags to riches occurrences at the expense of the taxpayers. When i look critically and with a non-partisan eye to these things why would i not then look favorably at a politician who by all accounts has his millions (Thompy)? could this not be a hedge against the temptations of corruption that seems to have engulf any number of current ministers? David Thompson does not have access to the treasury, and Leroy Parris does not seem to be interested in the kind of deals that saw David Shorey, and others enriched themselves, if he did he could have chosen to enter such deals with the BLP, they (blp) have accepted his contributions in the past . I know for a fact that Leroy Parris has a philosophical view about who controls Barbados, what needs to be done about it, and has demonstrated a willingness to put his money where his mouth is. We could choose to mistrust him without real and factual cause, like we did Hillary Beckles, and thereby prolong the possibility of economic enfranchisement for all.
vortex // April 9, 2007 at 2:53 pm |
Adrian you appear on the right track. But I recall that David Shorey was Chairman of CCB (from which the famous cheque came) and was the beneficiary of the change of use of land from Zone One to Zone Two in St. James. This should go to the DPP for real.

“there must be as a natural course of their responsibility seek to project the positives aspects of our society at all times.”
I really take issue with this. It is NOT the duty of the fourth estate to “project the positive aspects” of its society at all times. That is a job for PR execs. The job of journalists is to seek out and present the truth and to present it in a balanced way, giving all sides their say.
From this, I take it you are NOT a journalist, so please leave pontificating on what our duties should be to those who are trained in the craft.
Second interesting statement:
“In every society where the press has taking on a political agenda and where it has used its overwhelming power to negatively influence public opinion those societies became disruptive, democracy came under threat and the lives of their people were thrown into total anarchy.”
Eh? Precisely which societies are these may I ask? And which political agenda is the dangerous one? That of the ruling political power (which I’m sure would suit you fine) or other political bodies?
Because as far as I know, it has not been damaging to any society for a media organisation to take on a political agenda…as long as any media organisation is free to take on any political agenda it pleases. It is only when there are RESTRICTIONS on what political stances the media can take or to use your phrase when the political powers that be decide to “guard our nation against such reckless use and abuse of press power” that societies are “thrown into total anarchy”.
Yet, this

Exactly, but trying to unravel Sylvan Greenidge’s confused, immature and snail-paced brain is like entering through the eye of a needle. We were at school together. He worked at a hotel with me and I know him well. He is like a parrot and did not then and does not have an original thought.
That is why he got into so much trouble for slandering a DLP Minister in the 1980’s.
He is a blight to any political party he joins.
Royalrumble // April 11, 2007 at 12:57 pm |
This was sent to the BFP but just in case it is not carried there I am posting here for all to see.
Jerome all of the projects you mentioned are there for Barbadians to see. Even if there came in over budget there are there for us to see.
But what about the classic case of DLP theft which has not been refuted by them yet. The missing 30,000,000 pounds barrowed from the Barclays Bank in London by the last band of DLP crooks. Todate no one knows where the money went or what is was spent on. However, Thompy still brags, even now that the only thing that a bailiff can asked him is “the time of the day”.
He has money growing out of his ears and a**, so much so that at a public meeting in St. James he was heard making mocksport at the PM and saying that the PM only had $300.000 to retire on as a nest egg. That paltry sum is chicken feed to thompy who has collect $2.5 million alone on the sale of those plantation lands to clico.
Thompy has been promised twice what he has been paid already if he can pull this election off, become the Minister responsible for Town Planning, arrange the change of use of those plantation lands from agriculture to housing and put clico in a position to develop those land into upscale housing with golf courses and full fledged casino gambling. The deal between thompy and Trump has already been signed.
A Trinidadian company that did a study on Barbados’ water resources has aready warned the goverment that if the intended development is allowed to go ahead as currently designed it would put Barbados’ water reserves in further peril. But this information was dismissed by the “MAN AT THE HELUM” and he has insisted that his project will go ahead as planned. Thompy has been told that if he is to get his cut of the deal then he knows what he has to do and they know what they have to do.
But that is not the only monies thompy collects. He gets a handsome piece from assisting in the writing off of claims made by poor working Barbadians to a certain insurance company. Poor people who often do not have the money to fight the company ends up abandoning the cliam and thousands of dollars in the process. That money is then split-up between the bigs boys and Thompy.
But there is still more ways that he collects money from the poor. How many of you remember Velda a former maid at DLP headquarters? How many of you remember that she had a house? What about her son who is now languishing and homeless on the streets in Trinidad? Well Velda is dead. Her son is homeless. Velda’s home that should have been given to her son now stands in the name of the daughter of a well known lawyer in the DLP.
Talk about corrupt. This is the new low.

Royalrumble a.k.a Judas,
Your posting above, is the latest portion of warmed over BLP…PALAVER…!
You have spent so much time around TIEFFING Owen that you have now given everyone a CLUE on how OWEN :
1. Changed lands in St. James from ZONE 1 to ZONE 2 …!
Then the money is then split-up between the bigs boys ( Shorey, Nicholls , Owen and Royalrumble a.k.a Judas )…….!
2. Cut deals with property developers to get
$ 750,000.00 ” KICKBACKS “…!
3. Rob poor people of their lands….like the area where Gline Clarke ” Lady Friend ” resides on…!
You now BOAST that all the projects have been OVER BUDGETED…what about the MILLIONS of taxpayers $$$$$ UNACCOUNTED for….?
Talk about BLP corruption…..!
You and Owen Arthur have taken CORRUPTION to a … new low…….!

Royalrumble/Sylvan:
The Prime Minister wants Bath Plantation sold to Clico top develop a Golf Course or so I was told by someone in the PM’s office. Is this true?
Any plan to turn plantations into Golf courses would have to have been approved by Owen $ Arthur the Minister of Town Planning. Is this what he really did despite the Trinidad water study? Thanks for that information. This needs investigating.
You are making a further idiot of yourself if you dont realiise that the Barclays loan is provided for in the national accounts. The day you learn to read properly the tables in the Central Bank financial statistics, you will find it.
Why then your nonsensical comments one has to ask? You have risen from being a complete fool to being a reasonably intellingent person but with your nose stuck fully up the Prime Minister’s botsy. At least you should learn something when he farts.

Thank you Vortex a.k.a Jacka** for your response to me on the Barclays Loan. At least you have admitted that you did barrow the money. Now, for those us who can not read Central Bank reports, according to you, can you answer some questions for me?
1. What was the purpose of the loan?
2. What was the interest rate on the loan?
3. Was the loan used for the purpose for which Parliament had approved?
4. Was the level of interest charged on the loan the going rate then or was it as a result of the bad management of the Barbados economy at the time and the lack of confidence the internaltional lending agency had in our ability to repay?
5. Who was Miniter of Finance then?
6. Is it not the highest interest rate currently being paid by Barbados on any of it’s loans?
7. Was the Parliament of Barbados lied to about the purpose of the loan?
8. Would you say that the then Minister of Finance was competent in the exercise of his judgement in securing this loan?
9. Would you trust that Minister to negotiate a loan for Barbados again?
10.Was that Minister a trained economist and had he been do you think he would have made a better judgement call?

” Was that Minister a trained economist and had he been do you think he would have made a better judgement call? ”
The BLP claim to have TRAINED ECONOMISTS such as Owen & Mascot…!
Look at their RECORD…..!
1. a burgeoning NATIONAL debt….!
2. Owen Declares need to SELL bajan LANDS to pay BILLS..!
3. Mascot Declares Bajans buying too much LUNCH…!
4. Owen spent over $ 500 Million on Kensington Oval ……poor crowds now blame ICC, India & Pakisatan…!
5. Cannot after 13 YEARS get a MINIMUM wage policy in place…!
6. Owen put on the CESS but not sure if when it comes off if PRICES will FALL..!
That is the PROUD record of the BLP economists…!

This was brought over from the BFP.
To Jerome and the other DLP shit heads on this blog can you all tell me where did thompy get the $5.2 million that is currently sitting in a Malaysian account?
Is it true that just before the last General Election thompy had his assets transfered to the name of a very close friend of his? I am informed that he has now reclaimed them though with a little difficulty. Is this how the Integrity and Transparency legislation will work under thompy and DLP?
How well does thompy know a Mr. L Riley from the USA? Has he ever given thompy any money? Has thompy had anything to do with the circus that came to Barbados? Does Hartley Henry know this Mr. Riley? Talk up now ya hear before it is too late.

How is it that Minister Noel Lynch can be awarded $60 000 for being asked where he got his wealth and an ordainary working class family can have its character assasinated on page 16 and 17 of the Sunday Sun Octber 07th, 2007 and cant even get a lawyer to take the case.
The statements made in that article are defamatory, libelous and suggest that the Codrington family engaged in wrong doings at the thanksgiving service on Wed. Sept. 12
Did Melissa Wickham, whose by line appeared on the story contact the Oistins Police Station to corroborate Shirley Lintons’ Story. If she did she would have been told that the only FALSE REPORT Shirley Linton made to them at that time was that someone snatched the little girl from her hands.
Why did Shirley not make this report of gun and knife to the police at the time.
Photographs taken by Nation News photographers clearly show that the Lintons and their cousins the Oneals were the only ones in the melee and in fact the police called for the Linton family funeral cars and they the Lintons promptly left. I do not know if they were asked to leave by the police neither would I speculate.
I do know that the Codrington family are fourth and fifth generation worshippers at the church where the service was held and would never disrepect its sacred consecrated grounds.
To insinuate that someone on the behalf of the Codringtons pulled a gun and knife on her is a figment of Shirley Lintons imagination, the court case for her being a drug mule is not, it is a matter of public record.
Shirley Linton was charged in the law courts of Barbados either late last year or early this year (march) for importing drugs. Check the Nation archives. She was given nine (9) months to pay $50, 000 or go to Harrison Point.
At the time the matriarch of the Codrington family advised Donavere not to bring her anywhere near any of the Codrington family homes. THE CHILDREN AND CASSANDRA WERE ALWAYS WELCOMED.
A person or persons unknown paid off an initial $20, 000 of that sum. The remainder is due before the end of this year. However the money tree was buried in a cave in.
It is Shirley Lintons belief that no judge in Barbados would send her to Harrison Point if she is seen as a victim in the eyes of the public and as the only caretaker of Donnia Ciara Codrington. Shirley Linton does not even know how to correctly spell that childs name, she insists on calling her DONIYA ( total lack of Education).
On the Weekend after wet fete a concerened person (a female friend of Dons) telephoned the Child Care Board to state that Cassandra often left the children in the sole care of her mother while she worked or stayed at the Codringtons. The child care board had files on Donnia long before the cave in, hence the urgency to get out of the New Orleans and move away
The only member of the Linton Family to hold a legitimate job was Cassandra, who was paid by her husband Donavere like any other worker. Donavere fully supported the entire Linton Family through sales of DVD’s, second hand cars, computers and he was an appointed government employee in the Ministry of Environment and Energy, that is why Elizabeth Thompson called in the family to make arrangements for her ministry to pay the funeral bill. (But Trevor Prescod on the peoples business stated that two government owned oil companies put up $20, 000 for the funeral costs)
( the only person who witnessed the wedding was Shirley Linton which was held at her house at 6th Ave,. New orleans in the late stages of Cassandra difficult pregnancy on a Sunday )
But I got news for Shirley, a trust fund don’t pay out no money. And it is an educational fund to boot.
Free pass to jail PARASITE the hosts are dead.
Check the archives, everyhting in the story can be verified. But the mainstream media will never print it because they want money for their telethon…. flip the money….a good name is rather to be chosen than silver and gold.
I demand justice for Donavere the original liquidcsnake, thats why the women loved him.

BLP SCANDALS JUST WILL NOT GO AWAY
The questions that David Thompson has asked about the Hardwood Housing Factory Inc. need answers from Owen Arthur without delay. Information on this company should be at the finger-tips of all members of the Cabinet since it is a new company which, we are now told, is government-owned. The look of bewilderment which comes over members of the Barbados Labour Party whenever the word “Hardwood” is mentioned suggests that there are even questions at the highest levels of government about the operations of this new supposedly governmental entity.
It is known, for certain, that two members of this government know the full details – and many more than were raised by the Opposition Leader – in relation to Hardwood. And they must be made accountable. For example, since when was it the policy of Enterprise Growth Fund Limited to invest over 90% of the equity in a company? Are there any other companies given such a facility? Also, if the company was always to be government-owned why go through the Enterprise Growth Fund Limited? Why not establish it the same way in which Barbados Tourism Investment Inc., Barbados Agricultural Management Company, Hotels & Resorts Limited and so on were established?
The last week has been spent exposing the cracks, fissures and weaknesses of the government’s attempts to belatedly establish and maintain integrity in public life. It can’t be good enough for the government – even if it is on its last legs – to come to the public at the eleventh hour and under pressure to put into the public domain things that could have been said long ago unless they have something to hide.
But there is more: Owen Arthur sought to give the public the impression that the Public Accounts Committee was doing no work. Just two months ago, that Committee, which includes senior Ministers of government including Reggie Farley, Lynette Eastmond, Erskine Griffith, Trevor Prescod and Kerrie Symmonds, laid a Report in parliament which had to be written for the sorry period when Clyde Mascoll was Leader of the Opposition. So the idea that the Committee has not reported is simply not true.
We wonder what those senior Ministers were saying and feeling on Sunday in Christ Church as Owen Arthur was berating the Committee in public? We wonder whether they did not want to stand up and be counted and let the Prime Minister know that Hardwood has laid no financial reports which can be examined!
The information on Hardwood is clear. Owen Arthur must answer some questions about the four pavilions, the land at Four Hill, St. Peter, the lease-back of equipment, the treatment of workers, the employment of illegal workers and the breaches of the Factories Act. These questions become even more relevant now that it has been publicly stated that Hardwood is a government-owned company. Does the Prime Minister condone these practices? We hope not. And that is why an investigation is appropriate.
There is now a long list of issues which the public has to judge this government on. Only this week the Barbados Association of Professional Engineers raised their concerns about the flyover project. Will the government heed their concerns or will it rush ahead with this already over-priced project?
David Thompson has already said that the next election will be the flyover election in which there will be much “election fat” from the project. But added to this is the Veco/Prison scandal, the Greenland expenditure, the NHC building scandal, the scandal over the Gems Hotels, the Urban Development Commission scandals, the golden showers at Silver Sands and so many, many others.
All of the money wasted in these projects could have gone to improving health and the QEH, paying civil servants on time, improving education and rural roads, poverty alleviation and the like. Instead of this, there is a small clique of beneficiaries who have continued – without being elected – to make decisions.
We thank those members of the Barbados Labour Party – who care more about Barbados than any party – and who are saying enough is enough and who have been willing to assist us in this cause.
On Sunday night at Deacons Corner, you will hear more!
