Chief executive officer Winston Collymore, speaking to the media briefly yesterday following the launch of the Greeters programme, an initiative to help people find their way around the hospital, said they were looking at physically expanding the A&E and reducing waiting times
“We are looking at the waiting times there. We will agree to standard times in-house whereby if you go to the A&E, you would be expected to be seen and admitted within a certain number of hours. Those certain number of hours we are working on now to define,” he said.
Collymore said they had indicative standards which were now being discussed.
Other improvements being worked on include a new dialysis unit, new cardiac unit and re-equipping of the imaging department.
“By September, it will be the best of its type outside of Puerto Rico. Some of that equipment is already in place, the rest of it will be in place by the end of September.”
He added that the critical care unit was also being upgraded.
This is a good move by the Hospital as they strive to continue to provide top quality service to the people.
This hospital was built in 1960’s and has served Barbados well for decades. It is however a tragedy that it was starved of resources under the DLP admininstration in the 1990’s when they used the resources destined for the QEH to build the St. Joseph’s Hospital which in the end saw very few patients and turned out to be a complete was of resources.
It never properly recovered from this tragedy and lost good people and countless oppoutunities during that time. We are very happy and extremely pleased to see that as a result of the good and consistent work by this adminstration tp put the institution back into a state of good health that it is now on the road to recovery.
WELL DONE to the staff of the QEH.
Keep up the good work.

2006 – 1994 = 12 years
After all this time you still can’t take responsibility for administering the affairs of Barbados.
How many more years will you need to run the country before you can stop with this somebody ( the DLP ) did me wrong song.
You have had ever increasing finances to run the country.
Just do it.

Totally concur, Hants. After 3 terms, majority govt and a hot hot world economy – after 13 years you should be able to say it is my mess now. they sure take credit pretty fast even for things they didn’t start! Can’t butter de bread on both de side!

The hospital was built by a BLP administration. What do you refer to that we did not start ?

Willie, I think what West Side Davie is saying is that the government takes credit for things it did not start, like saying it build Lester Vaughan School, which the DLP started in the 1990’s, and then was unable to finish due to the structural adjustment programme. Yet with the QEH and other institutions that have run down under this government, you blame the DLP’s structural adjustment programme in the 1990’s.
It sounds silly and childish to speak or blame a structural adjustment programme whic occured over 13 years ago for all that is going wrong now when this government would have had the most money to spend than any other in the history of this country because of the same structural adjustment programme and VAT.
It stands to reason that had the priorities been correct, resources would have been allocated to vital areas such as the QEH and with proper management the hospital would not be in the condition it is in today. It was allowed to run to ruin for 13 years because, among other reasons. it never had an adequate budget. There was absolutely no reason for the QEH to be underbudgeted in a season of plenty. The priorities were wrong.
So you run the risk of sounding petty and incompetent when you raise the issue of what happened in the 1990′ when you had 13 years to make it right.

I miss Adrian. Where is he? Hope nothing happened to him after he sent out his email address and phone number. And I am serious.

Gald to see you have not been silenced William. Looks like you will have Abed to compete with.
From the day the BLP took over the Government 13years ago, it became your responsibility to run the country.
By now the QEH should be a top class hospital. The neglect is obvious. Any improvements you make now will be welcomed by the people of Barbados.
Its an election year so I am sure the QEH will become a gem of a hospital.

Adrian/Hindssight still here. I am at a soccer camp with my son. Did you read Dr. John Licorish article in todays nationnews? Obesity killing Barbadians: Mia Mottley immediately came to mind when i saw that headline.
She leads Barbadian in more ways than one. Yes i can’t stand de woman, her political opinions, her elist attitude, her dismal ministerial productivity, her liberal views, the legacy of her political name, well the whole package, or should i say the whole hog? But why the fear? what have i said that can be proven as defamatory? Isn’t Mia fat? Am i the only one that said that as Minister responsible for home affairs that the burning of glendairy should be held around her neck? that assumptions about her lifestyle have been in the public domain since her school days, I certainly have not reveal anything new. The national opinion of this woman is dismal just look at the number of person who are turning up the so call townhall meetings, no body wants to listen to her, for the most part people don’t understand what she is talking about. Remove her from the townhall meetings and i am confident that attendance will go up.

Cat eyes: Comparing the DLP to the BLP is useless, The BLP has done a lot more for the country that the DLP could ever have done. Here is how you should approach the BLP’s highlighting these very positive policy plans and structural improvement programs etc. Just say yeh great job, this is expected of you, or glad to see you are doing your job: but what about those things that we are in the dark about? and just start naming them.
…..What Barbados needs is a selfless leader and party who can formalize an election campaign centered around parlimentary reform, to include the popularly elect Prime Minister/president, incorporate some of the opinions that ronald jones suggested, to include a distinction between local and national representation, reform of our electorial system to include support for the formation of other political parties, also the decentralize governance. Unfortunately that person will most likely have to be a person who is not a proffessional politician, and a person who has already earned his money.

I will maintain that as long as funding of the QEH is not an issue that the GoB of the day should not be held responsible for it’s failures neither should it accept or be the recipient of any praise for a great job and service.

When making comparisons between the BLP 1994 to 2006 and the DLP prior to 1994 one has to consider a lot of factors.
The BLP can’t take credit for the influx of Billionaires buying land, houses and hotels.
These investors ar opportunistic and Barbados is now and has been for the last 50 years a stable environment and a good place to park or legally launder cash.
A lot of progress in Barbados has taken place because the rest of the Capitalist world has progressed and Barbados has been fortunate to get some of the”action”.
Some of Barbados’ best assets are, its hot, flat, english speaking, has beaches and mild mannered citizens.
Politicians try to take too much credit for some things that occur naturally.
Lets hope the good Lord keeps Barbados safe.
